What are Decimal, Fractional and American odds?

Here are two examples of winning $10 bets, worked out three different ways.

Decimal odds. Also known as European odds. The international standard. The odds include the stake.

  • Example 1: you bet $10 at odds of 4.0
    • Your total return is $40
    • This is made up of $30 profit and your $10 stake back
    • The return is simply odds * stake.
  • Example 2: you wager $10 at odds of 1.5
    • Your total return is $15
    • You get your $10 stake back and $5 profit.

Fractional odds. Popular in the UK and Ireland. Traditional as they are, they still calculate odds as a fraction. These odds do not include the stake.

  • Example 1: you bet £10 at odds of 3/1.
    • Your total return is £40
    • This is made up of £30 profit and your £10 stake back
    • Your return is (odds * stake) + stake.
  • Example 2: you wager £10 at odds of 1/2
    • Your total return is £15
    • You get your £10 stake back and £5 profit.

American odds. Used mostly in the USA, these odds are based on $100 amounts.

  • Example 1: you bet $10 at odds of +300
    • Your total return is $40
    • This is made up of $30 profit and your $10 stake back.
  • Example 2: you wager $10 at odds of -50
    • Your total return is $15
    • You get your $10 stake back and $5 profit.
